Product description
Antique Sterling Golf Trophy Pitcher Golfer Fownes- 1910 US Amateur- Geo Proctor
We are offering an antique Art Deco sterling silver golf trophy, made by Dominick & Haff , measuring about 10.75” tall and 9.5” wide and weighing 678.2g. This is a wonderful piece of golfing history, the “Holiday Cup” from 1919 and a few years after. It is shaped like a pitcher with detailed panels for the addition of names as the trophy was awarded to new victors. It was first won by a Geo S Proctor, but was claimed later that same year by W C Fownes Jr.
William Clark Fownes Jr. (October 2, 1877 – July 4, 1950) was an American amateur golfer. His father, Henry Fownes, founded and designed Oakmont Country Club. Fownes won the 1910 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He defeated Chick Evans (winner in 1916 and 1920) in the semi-finals, then defeated Warren Wood in the final. Fownes was the playing-captain of the first U.S. Walker Cup team in 1922. He guided the team to victory and played again on the team in 1924. He also won the Pennsylvania Amateur four times. Fownes served as president of the United States Golf Association from 1926 to 1927.
The awards inscribed on the trophy are as follows:
First Holiday Cup won by Geo S Proctor
1919
Nov 28- Thanksgiving Day W C Fownes Jr
1920
May 31- Decoration Day G S Proctor
July 5- Independence Day D M Campbell
Sept 6- Labor Day J D Holloway
Oct 12- Columbus Day C D Bonsall
1921

The bottom of the cup is marked “Grogan Company” and “Sterling 0310”.
Very good to excellent condition with minimal age-related wear patina. There is one small ding on the front panel.
