Description
Rough Aquamarine & Beryl Preforms for Faceting/Cabbing, 100 + carats. These pieces are trimmed and partially preformed from small areas in large chunks of rough beryl that came from the strategic stockpile of minerals back East about 25 years ago. As such, I believe most all of these have American origins, as the stockpiles were made prior to or during WWII. Beryl was the most common ore of the strategic metal beryllium used in steel making and for other uses. Most of it is opaque or translucent and often not particularly attractive unless in full 6 sided crystals. When you get clear or gem quality beryl, it consists of a family of gems including goshenite (colorless, white); aquamarine (blue), greenish; bright green (emerald); yellow to golden (heliodor); pink (morganite); or the very rare red (bixbite).
These pieces represent a lot of time and work marking, diamond sawing, & grinding to get to this place. Even so, some internal flaws and veils remain, not all pieces are "eye-clean", but many are. The darker, smaller pieces will usually have veils, which may or may not greatly effect a finished gem. Note that there are even some very pale pink, pale greenish, or darker golds in some batches. Pieces not suitable for faceting will still yield nice cabs or can be used for other gem craft purposes. You may also wish to send really small pieces overseas for cutting if you have access to such services. Largest piece in this particular parcel is over 10 carats. Smallest is less than one carat.
As a professional gem cutter, I've cut about all I need from this material, and nowadays am sticking to cutting Colorado aquamarines only, excepting for an occasional piece of superior color and quality. I have decided it's time to pass these along, so am starting them out on auction at less than per carat. If these sell, I will put up other batches as I have time.
